Imation prepares Blu-Ray and HD DVD optical media

High definition television and recorders begin to spread, and the war between Blu-Ray and HD DVD doesn’t seem to end so soon. As high definition content requires lots of storage, the need for high storage capacity media arises.

Imation announced that its development of HD DVD and Blu-Ray recordable media has reached the final state. The company plans to use a scratch-resistant coating in the development of both formats, to better protect the discs.

Imation is a member of the Blu-Ray Disc Association (BDA), but announced it will provide HD DVD writable
optical media as well.

During 2006, the company will launch rewritable and recordable Blu-Ray media formats, both 25 GB single layer and 50 GB double layer. Also, HD DVD recordable and rewritable media, single layer 15 GB and double layer 30 GB are planned.

Optware announced for 2006 their first generation of HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) disc. The holographic disc optical storage technology allows capacities of up to 1TB of data in a device the size of a classic DVD.
